Community Service

Community service is a value that we encourage our scholars at YMLA to participate in on a regular basis. This helps the young men develop interpersonal skills that are valuable in their daily lives as well as in the work force. Having a strong community service background can also provide a wonderful foundation for scholarship and college admission essays. In addition, participating in serving the community provides scholars with an opportunity to develop strong social values that help build their character and personality.

In order to be considered a community service activity, the scholar should not receive compensation for his participation. The organization can be from any aspect of the community. Examples of possible organizations could be church, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, food banks, animal shelters, and homeless shelters. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list of options, but it can provide a starting point.

The documentation form should be completed for EACH DATE of service. It is important for the scholar to reflect on his participation with the organization or activity. Therefore, we have provided a few questions for him to answer. These questions could be important in jogging his memory if he chooses to utilize his experience in an essay for a class or scholarship opportunity.
