A little about Mrs. Reed...

My family is my world! I have 4 adopted children that constantly keep me on my toes. I am originally from Louisiana, but was "stolen" from Oklahoma by Mr. White.

My favorite colors are glitter & sparkle. I love to travel and go scuba diving with my husband. I also spend a lot of time hanging out with my little ones.

I love working with the young men & staff at YMLA! They are an amazing group of people! My favorite thing is the family atmosphere. The scholars know that I will care for them unconditionally (just like any mom), but I will also point out what they need to improve upon when I see something going off track. My promise to them is that I will be 100% real and honest with them at all times.

One thing I hope to add to our program is Animal Assisted Interventions. I am currently waiting for approval from the district to have this at YMLA. This program would involve the use of my German Shepherd to teach a variety of skills to the scholars. These skills include concentration, compassion, responsibility, understanding nonverbal cues, learning to accept "no," and healthy touch. Siggy will also be able to assist students that may be experiencing anxiety or worry. There are so many thoughts and ideas that I have that can involve Animal Assisted Interventions. Fingers crossed that I can implement this in to our counseling program!!

Community Service

Community service is a value that we encourage our scholars at YMLA to participate in on a regular basis. This helps the young men develop interpersonal skills that are valuable in their daily lives as well as in the work force. Having a strong community service background can also provide a wonderful foundation for scholarship and college admission essays. In addition, participating in serving the community provides scholars with an opportunity to develop strong social values that help build their character and personality.

In order to be considered a community service activity, the scholar should not receive compensation for his participation. The organization can be from any aspect of the community. Examples of possible organizations could be church, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, food banks, animal shelters, and homeless shelters. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list of options, but it can provide a starting point.

The documentation form should be completed for EACH DATE of service. It is important for the scholar to reflect on his participation with the organization or activity. Therefore, we have provided a few questions for him to answer. These questions could be important in jogging his memory if he chooses to utilize his experience in an essay for a class or scholarship opportunity.
